New in Town

Did anyone watch that movie called "New In Town" with Renee Zellweger? No? Okay, I'll tell you about it. Renee is a high-powered executive who lives in a warm climate (Miami, maybe?) and is relocated to Minnesota to save a sinking ship (production plant). She has a moment where she steps out of the airport, and is blasted by the icy cold wind, then runs straight back into the airport.

I'm waiting on my Renee Zellweger moment. It's going to happen, but hasn't yet. It's also odd to me that Dallas was showered with snow earlier this week, and Pittsburgh still hasn't seen a flurry. However, my White Christmas is inevitable.

Let's see. I haven't really blogged since early November, but I assure you, most of my time has been spent preparing for the move to PA and with family for the holiday. I say 'preparing' for the move rather than 'packing' because we weren't allowed to pack our stuff, which I found odd at first. The movers packed, shipped and unloaded out items, and we only had one casualty so far. Unfortunately, my prized antique blue chair had it's back left leg broken off. HUGE sad face. The relocation company swears they'll get it back to good-as-new, but I'm having a hard time coping with it. Telling Mom about it has helped a lot, as I knew it would. Other than that, I haven't found anything broken! The TV base is another story...

As soon as we finished the 20 hour drive (two 10-hour shifts, stopping in Nashville, TN), we dropped our stuff and the cats off at the hotel we were staying at. The cats did fine, by the way.* We dropped in to a Primanti Bros. to have the famous Pittsburgh sandwich, complete with coleslaw and fries on the sandwich. What a trip! Michael loved it, squirting ketchup on each bite. I thought it was interesting, and I'm glad I tried it! The french fries reminded me of MG's.

The next day was the Lawrenceville Cookie Tour, where local shops and vendors give out homemade cookies (baked by two local bakeries, based on the shop owner's recipes), to shoppers. Since we now live in Upper Lawrenceville, we used the event to meet shop owners, explore the neighborhood, and eat delicious cookies. The cookies were gone so fast I didn't have a second to take any photos! It was a fun morning/afternoon, with a lovely lunch at Coca Cafe.

Since then, we've been lying low, at either the hotel or our new house. The movers came on Tuesday, and I've been unpacking since then. I've also been jockeying the service installments (cable, internet, repairman). We'll be living out of boxes for the next week or so, but I hope to have everything at least unboxed by next weekend. I'll post more soon!

*Note: We chose to drive our cats from Dallas to Pittsburgh because of a suggestion by our vet. They suggested we make a trial run, and give them 5 CCs of Children's Benadryl to lessen their anxiety. We did that, and it failed miserably. So, we drove them without the sedative, and they did MORE than fine. They mewed for about an hour each morning, then were sleeping or hanging out the rest of the way. Word to the wise: skip the syringe-down-the-throat agony, and just power through!

Goodbye 2009

Tomorrow will be the first year with double-digits at the end! Goodbye to 2009, a year that held a lot of ups and downs for me.

I purchased my first "adult" car. I love my Jetta, and I'm sure at some point I will give it an actual name. Right now it's "Boo." Get it? Because it's blue? Ha.

My grandparents gifted us with several items from their home once they moved into an assisted-living apartment. Two of the best things we received were antique chairs that we reupholstered. They're like new, and we love them!

I left a job I strongly disliked, and thus took a huge pay cut. It was my decision, whether idiotic or not, and I stand beside it. I know things will be better because of it.

I had my first big family dinner at my apartment, that I planned for weeks. It went well, and gave me a sense of accomplishment that I had created good food and elicited fun from my family.

Michael and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary together by going to camp in the Eldorado Lake area of Kansas. What a fabulous weekend - especially with the one I love.

I've made new friends, gone new places and learned new concepts. I am excited to see what 2010 has in store for me, and I have a few resolutions to make. Keep reading!

Cinnamon Rolls & Other Excitement

Yesterday morning I made cinnamon rolls for Michael and me - it was raining, and it seemed like a good day to make them. It took ALL morning (from 9:00am until noon), but they were excellent. I even made the cream cheese icing!

Tonight we're making a Garlic Roast Chicken (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/garlic-roast-chicken-recipe/index.html), an Ina recipe of course. We saw it on a DVRed show we missed a few days ago. (We just got a DVR...I know, we're behind with the times, but it's so neat!) We have carrots, onions, potatoes and parsnips to roast with it. It's going to be so beautiful.

This week is prep week here at the Oates apartment. It's finally here - the Family Dinner is set for this Saturday evening. I've finalized the menu - it's pretty much the same as the one I've already posted. Everyone but Jamie and Qas are coming, so it will be a full house! (10 total, I believe.) My mom told me that Qas will be in Albany visiting his father - I'm so jealous! I bet NY is so gorgeous right now! Anyway, it will still be a ton of people! I'm excited to have my family see the re-covered antique chairs and to see our apartment. Some of my family members haven't seen the apartment, and we've been living here for some time. I'll be sure to take pictures of the festivities.

Photos of Chairs - and Chicken Pot Pie!

So, after much waiting, and prodding my my readers & friends, I am posting! I have a two-part news to share. One piece I will share tonight, even though the visual results are not top-notch, and the other half I will share soon.
First:
The chairs are finally back! The two antique chairs my grandparents gave us have been reupholstered, and I think they look phenomenal. It's a heartfelt and special thing to get to revitalize these pieces, and give them a new home. Take a look:

The first is a button/barrel back chair we chose to cover in a light blue and damask fabric. It's a bold choice for what is, in my opinion, a bold chair. The second is the smaller and more dramatically shaped chair that we chose to cover in a springish green and golden dragonfly patterned fabric. I think they both look tons better than before. Thoughts?
After reading an enticing post from one of the best artists on the planet, I chose to make individual chicken pot pies for Michael and my dinner this evening. Yum! I finally got to use my special chefy crocks that I bought a year ago.
On a personal note: Thank you all for being so in-tune with my life and wanting to know my news. It feels great to know I have several people that care about what's happening with me. Thank you!
P.S. - No, I'm not having a baby.

Antique Chairs

I finally am posting pictures of our new chairs my grandparents gave us.

Barrel Back Side Chair

Club Chair (with Ina on top of it)

The club chair just needs a good cleaning, since it matches our decor (Navy blue and creme), while the side chair needs to be totally redone. It needs new springs, cushions and fabric. We're thinking a nice grey or green-based pattern. We're currently researching upholsters, and have found a few. I don't think we're going to have it done until after we go to Las Vegas!

At the family reunion (April 4th), my parents asked if we wanted to go to Las Vegas with them sometime soon. We talked, and we're going to go June 21-27th. It will be Michael's first time to go, so I'm sure we'll be doing a lot of sight-seeing along with losing our money! I hope we get to stay somewhere nice! Tomorrow we're going to Sherman for my uncle's birthday, so hopefully get some details then.

End of February

We indeed got our two new chairs & long, skinny table last weekend (Sunday), thanks to my dad. One is a 1940's side chair, and the other is a 1960's club chair. Michael, of course, looked these things up on the internet. I, on the other hand, was happy to just call them chairs and be thrilled with my new seating. We plan on getting them reupholstered, in order for them to match our decor. I'm in the process of finding a good reupholsterer, so if you know anyone good, please let me know!

When I bought my car, there were a few things I wanted to be done maintence-wise. Long story short - I have made several appointments to have these things done, and everytime something goes wrong. I have my final appointment, I hope, scheduled for this Wednesday. That day happens to be a very important day at work, so I am really hoping that all goes well.

It's weird weather time again in Texas. What's new? Next week should be really nice though - all in the mid-70 and I think 80 on Friday. Yay!
