{Over The Weekend} Games, Scones & Hurricanes

Well, people, we're still here and we haven't floated away...yet. The rain is coming down, and has kept coming down since yesterday late afternoon.
This weekend was mostly a lazy one.  We started things out with a college football game at Heinz field, which thankfully wasn't rainy {however, the threat was there!}. Then, my wonderful baker of a Husband decided to crack open his new cookbook, Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery,  and bring out his new food scale. He's subscribed to the notion that everything in baking needs to be measured by weight, or it won't come out right. Psssh, fine, leave that to him! {I prefer cooking, where I can just play things by ear and throw things in as I please.}
He flipped to the section on scones and announced that he was planning to make cinnamon honey scones. I about died. His first choice on what to bake happened to be one of my all-time favorite baked goods. And, these did not disappoint.

But, first the game. It was a 65% chance of rain, so we weren't too keen on staying during the downpour. We were lucky, though, because at most it just sprinkled. {We had our umbrellas in hand, anyway.}

Truth be told, Husband and I didn't really care much about the game itself, but more about seeing the inside of the stadium. Heinz Field is where the Steelers {Stillers} play. Many games have been won on that field, and where evildoers were planning to take over Gotham
I do have to say it was a bit of a letdown, as I really love PNC Park. They're actually similar in the roundabout people use to access their seats. Round and round. And, round and round.
Sunday was baking day. Husband decides from time to time to bless me with delicious baked goods, as I am not the baker of the family. He really does have a talent, y'all.
After they came out of the oven, he brushed them with some glossy, buttery glaze. Sigh.
Since we had them late in the day, we called it 'high tea'. Making things British-sounding makes it more appealing, yes? We poured mugs of Earl Grey, and set in on having a scone with butter and strawberry preserves. Incredible. Top notch.
I have to say, it was the best scone I've eaten in my life, and probably the best thing I've eaten in 5 years. Really. It was that good.
He's told me coffee cake is coming this weekend. I die.

  1. Food is so much more fun when it's "British." I'm also convinced there are fewer calories that way. We like to make what we call "English Breakfast" for dinner - fried eggs, baked beans, sausage, and tomato slices.

    I hope you guys are staying safe in the storm!

  2. Where did you learn of this "English Breakfast"? It sounds legit, but I need a source. :)
    And, yes, we're safe and dry. Thanks for asking!

  3. I'm pretty sure that English Breakfast is 100% fiction made up by a couple of crazy southerners wanting to pretend that beans are refined. ;)
